Energy : Responsible consumer/actors

Energy : Responsible consumer/actors

Faced with sustainability challenges, consumers want to make a contribution to the built environment, but what if they could gain something in return? The savings of consumption, for example ! The challenge is attractive for innovators. The objection to our past wasteful ways is too loud to be ignored. Responding to the call, strange blobjets are preparing to invade our electricity sockets - energy consumption meters. Google's Energy Information site opens by quoting Lord Kelvin, "If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it."

One example of these energy consumption meters is the Energy UFO, which Apple has already created an iphone application to accompany. (See : Visibile Energy UFO Power Strip Gets its Commands From Your Iphone.) Individual regulation, but collective benefits: a bet that Google is placing its chips on with its Powermeter. A belief shared by MIT's Mobile Experience Lab, which made a comparison of these devices throughout the university's dorm rooms in the form of "personal energy coach." In the end, the top prize goes to WideTag's Social Energy Meter widget, which uses social networking tools to profile users (a home with three children a room ≠ a student). Through the power of competition interested energy consumers can see how they rank amongst like-sized households, or within their neighborhood, city, regional, or globally.
